When Jesus refers to the fig tree in Luke ch 21 verse 29 to 33 is He speaking of Israel in the last days and could the 'other trees' be a reference to the surrounding nations?
To apply the fig tree to Israel we would need to have other Scripture witnesses to back us up. I propose that there are at least three and probably more but three will do to establish that there is precedent in Scripture for applying Jesus' reference to Israel; 1. Hosea ch 9 verse 10: "I found Israel like grapes in the wilderness; I saw your fathers as the first fruits on the fig tree in its first season." God saw the patriarchs of the nation as the beginning of Israel taken out of idolatry and brought into relationship with Him. 2. Joel ch 1 verse 7: "He has laid waste My vine and ruined My fig tree." God is speaking of Assyria having attacked Israel and ruining the land and plundering the people and goes on in the next verses to speak of the lament of the nation for the 'husband of her youth'. 3. Jeremiah ch 24: Here God speaks to Jeremiah concerning two baskets of figs which represent faithful Israel and unfaithful Israel. The basket of good figs speaks of those who are obedient to His word and go into captivity in Babylon and from these will come the believing remnant of Israel in the last days who will inherit the promises made to Abraham and the fathers.
